2:32 AM (emailed letter from Sharon Griffin for Jim
Manders to all of the shuffleboard community):
Greetings to
all of Jim's friends, readers and shuffleboard family:
As some of you may know, Jim Manders passed away early
Monday morning, June 13, 2005. He had been battling
cancer since the fall of 2004, and I can tell you
personally, that he fought the good fight. He left us
peacefully, in his favorite chair, at home in his
sleep and I am thankful that I could be with him. He
was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
I want to take just a moment or two to tell you how
much all of you, and Lagging4s meant to Jim, not only
as his health declined, but since the first edition
hit the streets in May of 2004. As those of you who
know Jim already know, Jim loved shuffleboard. It was
not just a game, it was a passion. He loved the
fellowship of shuffleboard and his shuffleboard
family, locally, nationally and internationally. He
loved to play the game, watch the game, read about the
game and write about the game. Even in these last
weeks, Jim spent countless hours working on the
magazine and making plans for future editions.
Lagging4s was inspired by his passion for shuffleboard
and his wish to create a cohesive, supportive
shuffleboard community which he believed was the way
to make shuffleboard a sport that competed with pool,
poker, bowling, golf and other sports for sponsorship,
publicity and popularity. His steadily increasing
readership and advertisers prove that he has made a
ripple towards that goal. Ripples spread.
It is my hope that Jim's passion and wishes for
shuffleboard and his shuffleboard family have inspired
continued momentum towards his goals, and that the
ripples will continue to spread and their effects
widen. Your support of Lagging4s and shuffleboard are
appreciated more than you know. Thank you.
Lagging4s was a very personal production to Jim.
Although we appreciate the offers to continue the
magazine, I believe Jim would want it to remain his
own, and so, the final edition of Lagging4s was the
June 8, 2005 issue.
Jim was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Hall of
Fame on June 25, 2005, at the Whistling Oyster in
Quilcene, OR. The event was a wonderful celebration of
Jim's life. My deepest thanks to his local
shuffleboard family who put so much heart and effort
into the day. More information about the event, and
about Jim's life and his passing is available at
eshuffleboard.com and at http://www.shuffleboardcorner.com.
I hope that I've done this properly and haven't
omitted anyone, if I have, please share. As I said,
this was a very personal project to Jim and this is
the first time I've touched this list.
Thank you. Play like you love the game.
Lagging4s has been put to bed.
